When most people think about buying cannabis, they picture walking into a sleek dispensary filled with corporate brands. But in Weed, California, Goldenhour Collective is taking a different approach – one that honors the region's cannabis heritage while embracing modern science and conscious consumption.
"What started out as a fun job to work while I was getting through college ended up being a career," Parker explained. "It's really because of the patients and the community aspect of what dispensaries were back then."
Parker challenges common misconceptions about cannabis, particularly the oversimplified indica versus sativa categorization and the focus on THC percentages. She emphasizes that understanding terpenes and cannabinoids is crucial for finding the right product for your desired experience.
"The terpenes and cannabinoids are really what creates this symphony and the variations from plant to plant," Parker noted. "A good comparison would be an apple. There's green apples, there's all these different kinds of varieties. And when you bite into it, you know you're biting into an apple. But the subtle differences between a cosmic crisp and a pink lady really has a lot to do with the way that the plant is grown."
This more profound understanding of cannabis science informs Goldenhour's mission to support local, family-owned farms practicing sustainable agriculture. These legacy growers, who have been perfecting their craft for generations, face increasing pressure from corporate cannabis companies despite producing some of the world's finest products.
"Flower grown up in Humboldt with care and attention from people who this is all that they do, and they've chosen this life for a reason versus some flower that's grown in a random warehouse in downtown L.A. – there's an inherent difference there," Parker observed.
The episode also delves into the importance of regenerative farming practices, including natural pest management and careful cultivation techniques that protect the environment and product quality. These methods starkly contrast to the mass-production approach that has led to recent recalls and safety concerns in the industry.
"These legacy growers, in my experience, the people that I've talked to and the farms that I've toured, they try everything they can to do it naturally," Parker shared. "I think ultimately we're trying to bring attention to the fact that there needs to be more balance in the industry, and there's a better way to do what we've been doing."
Whether you're a cannabis enthusiast, medical patient, or simply curious about the industry's evolution, this episode offers valuable insights into conscious consumption and the importance of supporting sustainable, community-focused cannabis businesses.
